New Jersey shares borders with New York to the north, Pennsylvania to the west, and Deleware to the south. Nearby bodies of water are the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay. New Jersey consists of 4 regions: the Atlantic Coastal plain with low hills, pine forests, and salt marshes; the Piedmont, with rolling hills and narrow valleys, is the nexus of the Hudson, Passaic, Remapo, and Raritan rivers and home to many of the state's major cities; the Highlands, which have rocky ridges and many lakes; and the Appalachian Ridge, a mountainous region home to the namesake mountains.
