New Jersey (nickname "The Garden State") was adopted into the union in 1787, the 3rd state to do so. Its population as of the 2000 census is approximately 8.431 million citizens. Although its biggest city is Newark, the capital is actually Trenton. The state bird is the eastern goldfinch and the state flower is the common violet.
